April 2nd is International Autism Awareness day. Autism is also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) which is a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioural changes. Today, 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with autism in Ontario. This increase demands more support for children in schools across Ontario.
In supporting our effort to raise autism awareness in April, our school will participate in our annual “Toonie 4 Autism” campaign for the month of April.
The objectives of this campaign are:
· To raise awareness about autism among students
· To educate students about the positive impact of community involvement
· To support families living with ASD by letting them know that they are not alone and their challenges matter to all of us in the community
Students will be receiving a paper leaf donor card, that they can write their names on. The cards will be placed on our community tree located in our front foyer. Please consider giving a toonie ($2) as a donation so that you can be apart of the support to foster an inclusive society with no barriers for children with autism.
