Easter Long Weekend (April 14 – 17)

The school will be closed on Friday April 14th (Good Friday) and Monday April 17th (Easter Monday). Have a great long weekend.

Special Guest: Eric Walters, May 9th

Eric Walters, Award-winning Canadian author will be visiting us on Tuesday, May 9th. This visit was made possible by the generous contributions made by students, families and staff who purchased books during our November Scholastic Book Fair. Mr. Walters will be sharing his love of reading and writing with us during his full-day visit. All students from K-8 will have the opportunity to meet him. Mr. Walters is providing us with the chance to purchase his books at a discounted price, excluding the taxes. Please look-out for a pre-order form. Students who pre-order before April 21st will have them personally autographed by Eric Walters. On May 9th, Mr. Walters will be signing books students already own and he’ll be bringing more books for students to purchase. Parents and family members are welcome to join us on that day to hear one of the presentations.

Scholastic Book Fair (April 24 – 28)

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school and you are invited to come and share in this celebration of literacy with us! Now more than ever, reading is vital to leading a better life. Knowing how to read is just the beginning. Motivating young people to keep reading, comprehend what they read and develop the ability to think creatively are the end goals. Scholastic Book Fairs has the books to motivate more reading. With your involvement, we can inspire children to practice reading and read more often. Together, we can make a difference in their lives that will last a lifetime. We are hosting our second Scholastic Book Fair during the week of April 24 – April 28th. Monies raised from this fair will be used to purchase materials for our Learning Commons Maker Space such as virtual reality goggles, circuit boards and a second Ollie Robot. Book exchanges will cease during that week. We will be open daily during morning recess 11:00-11:20 a.m., lunch recess 1:20 -2:00 p.m. and after school 3:40-4:00 p.m. Students will also have the chance to visit the fair during the week on their designated scheduled time. The Fair will be closing on Friday, April 28th at 2:00 p.m. in order to prepare for pick-up.

Science Fair Building Materials (Pickup April 18 – 27)

For the 1st time this year, Beckett farm families participating in the Science Fair on May 10 will be provided with basic items to help build their project. This move is intended to help defray the cost for families wishing to participate. Students will be invited to drop in at the Science Room, #226 between 1:20 and 1:45pm on Tuesday, April 18 and Thursday, April 27 to pick up items such as:

  • Glue/Glue sticks, Tape, Bristol board, Rubber bands, Paper clips, Popsicle sticks, Coffee filters, Straws, Cardboard, Plastic utensils, String, Double A batteries
  • Students may be able to sign out larger items like glue guns

Please remember these items are open to all students who have registered and are participating in the science fair.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School Grade 8 Math Initiative (April 10-13)

Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School (P.E.T.HS) is undertaking a math initiative to assess the high school math readiness of current Grade 8 students. Students from P.E.T.HS’s elementary feeder schools will be involved in this initiative. During the week of April 10 – 13, Grade 8 homeroom teachers at Beckett Farm Public School will administer a diagnostic test prepared and supplied by P.E.T.HS All questions will be multiple choice. Student answer sheets will then be sent back to P.E.T. to be marked and at-risk students flagged for extra math assistance. Parents will be provided with updates, as needed.

Gauss Math Contest for Grades 7 & 8 students (Signup April 10-13, Contest May 10)

Beckett Farm has again registered to allow interested Grade 7 and 8 students to participate in this contest which is run by the University of Waterloo, Centre of
Mathematics and Computing. Participation is free and completely optional and students are expected to practice at home using past contests. During the week of April 10 – 13, students will be asked to indicate interest in participating in order to ensure we have enough booklets for the test. Students will write the contest here at Beckett Farm on May 10. Participating students will receive a certificate of participation.
