Diamond Day- Lunar New Year!
February 5, 2019
Lunar New Year is a cultural and religious celebration for many Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities.
Many rituals are associated with this festive occasion. They include cleaning house, paying off debts, settling old arguments, and other means of making a “fresh start.” To celebrate, people may light firecrackers, hang poetry, enjoy a family feast (oranges and apples are considered lucky fruits), exchange gifts (adults may give children laisee, red envelopes filled with money), and buy new clothes or new shoes.
Schools will acknowledge this occasion through various activities that promote sharing and understanding.
We wish all staff, students and community celebrating Lunar New Year a happy and joyful celebration in the company of family and friends.
新年快乐!
African Heritage/Black History Month!
Celebration of Black History/African Heritage Month has been a part of Canadian society since the 1950s. Lieutenant Governor Hal Jackman declared February as Black History month in Ontario in 1993, and it was in 1995 that the Honorable Jean Augustine made the same declaration in the House of Commons in Ottawa.
These declarations set the stage for acknowledgement of the contributions of peoples of African Heritage to the cultural, economic, political and social fabric of Canada dating back to the early 1600s. They also increased our awareness that people of African Heritage are an integral part of Canadian history.
During the month of February, we deliberately reflect upon the legacy of African history in all its various forms, and we join all Canadians in celebrating Black History/African Heritage month. By contemplating on persons of African heritage, famous and not so famous, who have been of significant influence through their ideas, words and actions, we appreciate the place of African history in the history of the world.

Knitting Club at Beckett Farm PS!
Due to a combination of student voice and our personal love of knitting and crocheting, we are starting a Knitting and Crocheting Club (we are working on coming up with a snazzier name!). Students have voiced a desire to knit/crochet items for various charitable organizations, and so that is one of our main goals for the club. Others just simply want to learn or have a space to participate in a mindful, creative activity. So far, the club is mostly comprised of Intermediate students with a few grade 5s and 6s. If there is an overwhelming request for a club for younger students, we may look into that later in the year.
February 6th, 2019 is Winter Walk Day!
Winter Walk Day is celebrated by schools across Canada on the first Wednesday of February each year. Walking and wheeling to and from school is fun every day, so we encourage you to journey outside throughout the entire month of February!
York Region’s first Child Care and
Early Years Service System Plan
The Regional Municipality of York’s Integrated Children’s Services Division works closely with different partners to offer a wide range of child care and early years services to children aged 0-12 and their families. The Child Care and Early Years Service System Plan will provide a common focus and priorities to meet the community’s changing needs. It is important that services are responsive, accessible, affordable and high-quality.
To inform our planning, we want to hear from you about gaps in the system and learn about what is most important to you. This survey should take approximately 6-8 minutes and can be completed individually or collectively as a School Council. It will be open until February 8, 2019. Your responses are voluntary and will be kept anonymous and confidential, and will be used with feedback received from other partners in the final Service Plan.
