April 10- International Day of PinkScreen Shot 2019-04-07 at 8.34.47 PM

It is a day when communities across Canada and across the world unite to celebrate diversity and raise awareness about the need to stop homophobia, transphobia, discrimination and all forms of bullying.

On this annual day in April, individuals wear pink to show respect for diversity and to demonstrate support for learning and working environments which are safe and inclusive of people from all different backgrounds.

At Beckett Farm PS, we value and are committed to supporting all our diverse social identities that are present in and outside of our building, and we encourage all students and staff to show their support by wearing pink on this momentous day.

Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year, is celebrated in April every year. Vaisakhi is also celebrated in some other parts of India, particularly in some of the northern and eastern states.

For Sikhs, Vaisakhi celebrates the birth of the Panth Khalsa order (the Order of the Pure Ones) established by Guru Gobind Singh. It is at this time that Guru Gobind Singh gave the Khalsa order the five distinct symbols of purity and courage which would make Sikhs identifiable: the Kesh (unshorn hair); Kangha (the wooden comb); Karra (the iron bracelet); Kirpan (the sword) and Kachera (underclothing).

Some of the ways that this day is traditionally honoured include visiting a place of worship, participating in a mela (fair), indulging in mithai (sweets), fruits and lassi (a sweet yogurt drink), and taking a ritual bath or renewal.

We extend good wishes to all staff, students and members of the Sikh and Indian communities who will be celebrating Vaisakhi.

We have already begun to plan for the new school year! We will make every effort to place students in the best learning environment where we take into account their individual needs, academic achievement, emotional/social development and work habits. Class placements will occur in May.

When teachers and administration meet, we strive to create balanced classes based on the following criteria:

  • needs of exceptional students
  • academic strengths and needs
  • social/emotional needs
  • gender
  • parental/guardian input based on academic programming needs of their child (e.g. need to work in a certain structured environment)

As parents/guardians, if you have any input regarding your child, questions or comments, please share with the office- IN WRITING by Tuesday, April 23, 2019. It is important to note that the final decision regarding your child’s placement will be that of the School’s Administration and Staff.

Thank you.

Mr. Matt and Ms. Prebtani

Beckett Farm ECO TEAM- Announcement

Dear Parents & Guardians,Screen Shot 2019-03-31 at 1.24.21 PM

Did you know that more than 1 billion plastic shopping bags are given out across Canada every year, all of which can be reused and recycled?

With this in mind, we ask that your child bring in any plastic shopping bags you may have at home so that they can be sent away to be recycled into small pellets and used to make a variety of new products. With your support, we can help millions
of plastic bags get recycled instead of sent to the landfill!

Please send your child to school with plastic bags from March 25th to April 19th.

Thank you!
